A resident of the Ojai Valley since childhood, Marc Whitman is an accomplished and valued contributor to the community’s architecture. His designs of both private homes and commercial buildings attest to his values of nature and social responsibility, and have helped to enhance Ventura County since he founded Whitman Architectural Design there in 1985.
After graduating from Nordhoff High School, Marc went on to Arizona State University and received a Bachelor of Architecture in 1981. By 1989 he became licensed with the State of California and a member of American Institute of Architecture. He received both N.C.A.R.B and LEED certification, and is a California Licensed Contractor.
His small, privately-owned firm provides design, planning, pre-design studies, construction documents, and interior architectural services. The construction branch offers cost-estimation and budgeting, construction administration services and construction supervision.
Marc’s work is deeply ingrained in his philosophy that the natural environment and architecture go hand in hand. His belief in the strength of the relationship between nature and design set the stage for his firm’s success. Winston Churchill is known for saying, “We shape our environment, then our environment shapes us.” Marc expands on this sentiment by asserting that “integrating architecture and nature is the ultimate marriage of mind and heart.” Such integration has resulted in structures that work beautifully and functionally in their environment, complementing, rather than opposing, nature.
Mark maintains a balance between personal ambition and motivation with the awareness that his work influences the surrounding world. He views architecture as the “conduit by which we combine our clients' ideas with the environmental and social responsibilities. We ultimately gain purpose by leaving this world a better place by our contributions." He also refuses to let his personal tastes stand in the way of letting the clients and environment’s determining factors influence design.
Over the years, Marc’s firm has accrued an impressive list of residential projects, predominately custom homes but also remodels and additions. Among them, to name a few, are the Rice, Laby, Andren and Gramckow Residences. He has also completed numerous commercial projects—many of which have won awards—including The Ojai design center, Presbyterian Church restoration, the charming Blue Iguana and Emerald Iguana Inns, the Watermark Restaurant, the Kali Manley Memorial Trolley Stop, and Ojai Valley Paseo.
While his design philosophy lies at the heart of his mission, Whitman Architectural Design strives to meet the highest quality standards of production. Twenty five years of experience in Ventura has solidified his expertise with the land and climatic conditions. By incorporating top-notch technology with hand-drawn renderings, Marc consistently produces his work with completeness and precision. Marc surpasses clients’ expectations by involving them throughout the process and making sure they are 100% satisfied with the design. He effectively coordinates his efforts with engineers and consultants to maximize cost-and energy-efficiency. In addition, Marc keeps environmental concerns at the forefront by being LEED certified and using green building practices.
Marc’s involvement in the community extends past architecture to organizations with various goals. He supports the Education Foundation, Film Festival and Youth Foundation in Ojai. He spent several years on the City of Ojai Planning Commission and is a member of the Ojai Valley Green Coalition.
